Google Ads Local Actions - Other Engagements: What It Means and How to Set It Up

If you've spotted "Local Actions - Other Engagements" as a conversion goal in your Google Ads account and had no idea what it actually covers, you're not alone, it's the vaguest-named goal of the six local actions conversions, and Google's documentation didn't always spell out what falls under it. It does now.

What triggers a "Local Actions - Other Engagements" conversion

Per Google's own documentation, Other engagements tracks the number of clicks on additional user actions on your business locations, specifically "Share Location," "Save," "Photos," "More Info," "Place Exploration," and more, while or after engaging with your ads. It's the catch-all for everything on a Business Profile listing that isn't Directions, a call, a website click, an order, or a menu view, secondary interactions that show someone was engaging with your listing without taking one of the more clearly commercial actions.

That "and more" in Google's own phrasing means the exact list isn't guaranteed to be exhaustive or fixed. Treat the named examples as the core of it, not necessarily the entire set forever.

Is it available for bidding, or reporting only

Reporting only. Other Engagements, along with Website visits, Orders, and Menu views, can't be used in a Smart Bidding strategy. You can see it in your reports, but you can't set a bid strategy to optimize toward it. Only Directions and Clicks to call support bidding, and Clicks to call only in Performance Max.

Why this number is usually the noisiest one

Because it bundles several different, lower-intent interactions into one goal, Other Engagements tends to have the highest volume and the least clear meaning of any local action. A "Save" click and a "Photos" click represent very different levels of interest, but they're counted identically here. Treat this metric as a general engagement signal, not evidence of purchase intent, the way you'd read a Directions or Clicks to call conversion.

Where to find it in your account

  1. Conversion goals page. Goals → Summary → View all conversion actions, filtered by Conversion Action.
  2. Campaign overview page. Campaigns → add the "All Conversions" column, filtered by Campaign segment.
  3. Stores report. Campaigns → Stores.

How to set it up

  1. Link your Google Business Profile to Google Ads, so location assets exist.
  2. Confirm location assets are active at the account, campaign, and ad group level.
  3. Wait for at least one qualifying click to occur, a Save, a Photos click, or any of the other bundled actions. Google creates the goal after a real conversion, not before.
  4. Google auto-creates "Local Actions - Other Engagements" as a Google-hosted goal. No tag or code to install.
  5. There's nothing further to configure for bidding, since this goal is reporting-only in every campaign type.

Eligibility

Available for any advertiser with active location assets in eligible countries. Reporting is restricted for sensitive categories, religion, sexual interests, children, and certain health-related businesses including abortion clinics, addiction treatment facilities, domestic violence shelters, fertility centers, and counseling centers.

Frequently asked questions

What specific actions count as "Other Engagements"? Google names Share Location, Save, Photos, More Info, and Place Exploration, plus unnamed others. It's the bundle of Business Profile clicks that don't fall under Directions, Clicks to call, Website visits, Orders, or Menu views.

Can I bid toward Local Actions - Other Engagements? No. It's reporting-only in every campaign type, with no bidding option available.

Why is this number so much higher than my Directions or Clicks to call conversions? Because it bundles several lower-effort interactions together, saving a listing or viewing photos takes less commitment than requesting directions or placing a call, so it naturally happens more often.

Should I be concerned if this number is low? Not necessarily. It's a supplementary engagement signal, not a core performance metric. Low volume here doesn't indicate a problem with your campaigns the way a drop in Directions or calls might.

Do I need to install anything for this to appear? No. It's generated automatically as a Google-hosted goal once your Business Profile is linked, location assets are active, and at least one qualifying click has occurred.

Full detail is in Google's own documentation on local actions conversions.

This is one of six local actions conversions. See the full local actions conversions guide for how it compares to the other five.

If your conversion reporting has goals like this one that nobody on your team can actually explain, that's exactly what conversion tracking sorts out.
