Local Services Ads Mistakes to Avoid

TL;DR: Most underperforming Local Services Ads accounts aren't broken, just set up too narrowly, and none of the fixes need a bigger budget. The seven settings to check are service area, job types, bidding strategy (Maximize Leads versus Max Per Lead), messaging, photos, reviews (fewer than 5 can limit visibility in some categories), and direct business search, which is off by default. Most accounts have at least two or three of these unfixed.

Most underperforming Local Services Ads accounts I look at aren't broken, they're just set up narrower than they need to be. None of what follows requires a bigger budget to fix.

1. Service area set too tight

Setting your service area down to specific zip codes instead of your whole county or metro cuts off leads you'd actually take. Google's own guidance is to set service areas broadly rather than narrowly, you can always turn down a job that's genuinely too far, but you can't win a lead you were never shown for.

2. Not selecting every job type you actually perform

Same logic as service area. If you do 8 kinds of jobs but only selected 3 job types when you set up your account, you're invisible for the other 5 searches, even though you'd happily take that work.

3. Still on Max Per Lead instead of Maximize Leads

Max Per Lead caps what you'll pay per individual lead. Maximize Leads lets Google's bidding automatically work to get you the most leads within your budget. If you haven't touched your bidding strategy since setup, this is worth checking, Google's own recommendation is Maximize Leads for most advertisers.

4. Messaging turned off

Message leads typically cost less than phone call leads, and they let customers reach you outside business hours, when your phone line isn't the fastest response option. Leaving messaging off means missing every customer who'd rather text than call, a growing share of the market, especially with younger homeowners.

5. No photos, or old ones

High-quality photos of your actual team, vehicles, and completed work aren't decoration, Google's guidance is explicit that they influence lead generation. A profile with generic stock imagery or nothing at all reads as less trustworthy than one with real photos of real jobs.

6. Fewer than 5 reviews

Some business categories won't even fully surface in results below a minimum review threshold. If you're newer to LSA or just haven't prioritized review collection, this alone can be capping your visibility regardless of everything else being dialed in.

7. Direct business search not enabled

This feature makes your ad show up when someone searches your actual business name, and you're only charged for genuinely new customer leads that come through it. It's close to free visibility for anyone already looking specifically for you, and it's off by default.

The pattern here

Every one of these is a setting, not a spend increase. Before assuming your budget is too low or your bid is too weak, it's worth a 15-minute pass through service area, job types, bidding strategy, messaging, photos, reviews, and direct business search. Most accounts have at least two or three of these sitting unfixed.
