CallRail integration with Google Ads and GA4 for US businesses
I set up CallRail integration with Google Ads and GA4 for US businesses where the phone is how customers actually buy. Each call gets tied back to the campaign and keyword that produced it, and spam calls get filtered out, so Google Ads optimizes toward real leads instead of clicks.
Typical turnaround: within a week
Sound familiar?
You know how many calls you get, but not which campaign or keyword drove them
Your ad platform thinks a lead didn't convert, because the conversion happened on the phone
You can't tell a real customer call from a wrong number or spam without listening to every recording
Here's what changes
Every phone lead traced back to the exact campaign, ad, and keyword that generated it
Call conversions feeding back into Google Ads so it optimizes toward calls that matter
Call recordings and transcripts you can actually use to improve sales, not just track volume
How it works
Deploy dynamic number insertion
Set up tracking numbers that swap automatically based on traffic source, so every visitor sees a trackable number.
Connect to your ad platforms
Send qualified call conversions to Google Ads and call events to GA4, so bidding can optimize toward real leads.
Set up quality filters
Configure call duration and keyword-spotting rules so spam and wrong numbers don't count as leads.
Hiring for CallRail integration? Here is what it should actually include
A proper CallRail integration with Google Ads and GA4 does three things. It shows which campaign and keyword produced each call, it sends the calls that count back to Google Ads as conversions so bidding learns from them, and it reports those calls in GA4 next to your forms and purchases. Installing CallRail and swapping a number on your site only covers the first one, and sometimes not even that.
The mechanics matter. CallRail's dynamic number insertion swaps the number a visitor sees based on where they came from, and its Google Ads tracking relies on a script on your site capturing the Google click ID when someone lands on a page, then matching a later call to that visit. The GA4 side is a separate connection: CallRail sends calls to GA4 as events, with details like source and campaign passed as custom parameters, so I set up the matching custom dimensions and mark the right events as key events. CallRail's own documentation says those GA4 events do not feed Google Ads reporting inside GA4, which is why the Google Ads conversions come from the direct Google Ads connection. Counting the same call both ways is the classic way to double your call numbers, and I check for it.
Two things trip up most setups. First, calls from call extensions (call assets) and call-only ads never load a page, so CallRail's usual method cannot see them. Those need Google's Call Details Forwarding, which I explain in a separate post. Second, not every call is a lead. A wrong number or a spam call that lasts long enough can look like a conversion, so I configure call duration and keyword-spotting rules before anything is sent to Google Ads.
Before you hire anyone for this, ask how they will prove it works. I place test calls from a real ad click, then confirm the call shows up in CallRail, in Google Ads and in GA4 the way it should, and I hand over documentation of what was built. If you cannot see how your own call tracking is wired afterward, it is a black box.
Who CallRail integration is for, and who can skip it
This is built for businesses where the phone is the main way customers reach you: contractors, home service companies, and other local businesses running Google Ads where a call, not a form, is the sale. If you know roughly how many calls you get but not which campaign or keyword drove them, or Google Ads reports far fewer leads than your phone actually rang, this is the fix.
You probably do not need it if almost all your leads come from online forms or checkout, since call tracking would add a subscription and moving parts for little gain. If you get only a handful of calls a month, Google Ads has its own call conversion options for calls from ads that may be enough for now. And CallRail is a paid tool on its own plan, billed by CallRail separately from my work, so factor that in.
If you already use a different call tracking provider, tell me. The principles carry over, but I specialize in CallRail and will say so if another tool is a better match.

Frequently asked questions
How does CallRail track which Google ad led to a phone call?
A script on your site captures the Google click ID when a visitor lands from an ad, and dynamic number insertion shows that visitor a tracking number. When they call, CallRail matches the call back to that visit and its campaign details. Calls placed directly from ad buttons skip the page, so they need Google's Call Details Forwarding.
What access do you need to set up CallRail integration?
Admin-level access to your CallRail account, edit access to Google Ads and GA4, and a way to install the CallRail script on your site, usually through Google Tag Manager. I also need to know which phone numbers your ads and site use. If you have not shared CallRail access before, my guide covers how.
Does CallRail track calls from call extensions and call-only ads?
Not with its standard method, because those calls never load a landing page. The fix is Google's Call Details Forwarding, which sends call data to CallRail while Google itself tracks the conversion through a Calls from ads conversion action. I cover the whole setup in a separate post.
Will my CallRail calls show up as conversions in Google Ads through GA4?
No. According to CallRail, its GA4 events do not appear in Google Ads reporting inside GA4, because they lack a standard click ID field. Call conversions reach Google Ads through CallRail's direct Google Ads integration instead. GA4 gets its own copy of the events for analytics, and I make sure the two are not double counted.
How is CallRail integration different from conversion tracking?
Conversion tracking covers the actions that happen on your website, like form submissions and purchases, through GTM, GA4 and Google Ads tags. CallRail integration covers phone calls, which need their own numbers, matching and quality rules. Most local service accounts need both, and I set them up so the totals line up.
How long does CallRail integration take?
Most CallRail integrations are done within a week once I have access. That includes number insertion, the Google Ads and GA4 connections, call quality rules and test calls. Calls placed from real ad clicks are the final check before I call it finished.
